I mean, textbooks usually are tedious. When I was a kid, I was reading mostly fiction. It's hard to know more about what the problem might be without a better idea of what the process is. Are you just teaching young kids to read, or is there something more advanced going on?

I didn't really catch on to the idea that you could actually think by writing things down until this past year. It's always been that you think thing, then somehow contort your thoughts into 5 paragraphs (including an introduction and conclusion)

What actually did help with this was reading a bunch of essays that looked like people trying to figure things out, or things written because the point being conveyed was important, rather than essays written for the sake of writing. Blogposts, basically.
