The rest of the well-done open source stuff (gcc, python, etc) is nearly as important to programming as electricity, and should be considered a utility rather than a project.

Also, it's worth noting that sometimes the reason we use really old stuff is because it's actually better than new stuff. Linux>Windows for programming because UNIX was designed for programmers and the innovations Windows makes haven't improved it in that aspect.
