Fictional role models are less useful, but there's more of them and they lie less about their life. Their usefulness depends greatly on the realism of the story, with respects to causality not physics.
Role models are useful. They let us know about different ways of being, and the end result of them. They don't have to be positive - negative role models work just fine as warning signs.

I could, perhaps, write a story with the main characters being possible ways I could be, that might suit me. Dream how I could be into existence. Let them interact with the world, however that might be. Channel my fictional selves in real situations.
