With Mac Catalyst I would design with an iPhone-sized arboard first.

Look at one of your app open windows on your Mac right now. Make it that size. I always go for smaller size first. It’s extraordinarily similar to doing s responsive web design. Has to work at all sizes. But there is no “one” size really.

1280*800 (13” MBP) or smaller, depending on how you assume users will use the app.

1440×900, but sometimes much larger when working on something like Studio with an infinite canvas. With proper constraints and pinning in the design tool, the “preview” of the mockup/prototype can be set to anything, which in this case the art board size doesn’t matter to me.

I’m sorry for the advice. This is for anyone else reading. With today’s and tomorrow’s design tools, you can set the “preview” of your work to MBP 13/15, Surface Pro, iPhone, Pixel, etc. So, the artboard/frame doesn’t matter much at all and highly depends on what your app does.

1440 x 900 desktop size, with the app window smaller. Realistically work flows involve jumping between apps, so it usually helps to have them in the background for story purposes.

I was looking into this recently. There's nothing in the MacOS HIG for window size. I would say "as big as it needs to be but no bigger" haha.

I decided to use 1180x725 as my starting point/max size as that's the size of the App Store when you first launch it - and I figured they'd made some reasonable assumptions on that being a good size across devices.
