Some context for the NYT piece on the state of abortion. Anti-choice movement is not and has never been an honest broker. Leaders of the movement have always known they are on the wrong side of public sentiment so they have resorted to undercutting democracy to get their way. /1
Article spotlights gerrymandering, voter suppression and stacking courts to seize power for an unpopular agenda, but stops short of discussing the disinformation and intimidation that are also hallmarks of anti-choice campaign designed to silence 77% of us who believe in Roe. /2
Anti-choice groups know Americans aren’t divided on the question of whether politicians should determine the fate of families or women should be free to do so ourselves. So, they rely on dangerously absurd allegations and deliberate misinformation to maintain power. /3
The combination of all of these strategies has proven to be very powerful in their campaign to decimate rights -- yes, abortion rights but they don't stop there. Rights of immigrants, people of color, LGBTQ people all are threatened by this movement. /4
But this isn't new: What we’re seeing today is a culmination of decades-long attacks on our reproductive freedom. And far from taken by surprise, advocates all over have been ringing the alarm for some time. From repeal Hyde efforts to Wendy Davis' historic filibuster,.../5
We've been plotting and working and organizing and voting and litigating and protesting and more. Are all movements sometimes messy? Sure. Are some, who have not been on the front lines, just waking up to the threats? Sure and we welcome them. /6
But that doesn't negate all the great work that's been done and the proof is in the polling. If the Democratic gains this past Nov. weren’t enough proof, polls show that over 70% of Democratic voters are more likely to vote for a candidate that supports abortion rights. /7
56% of Democrats said the recent abortion bans are a primary driver for their vote in 2020. Not just Dems either. Independent and soft partisan women don’t like attacks on our freedoms either. This is precisely the group that the anti-choice groups in the piece.../8
...are targeting w/disinformation. They know better than anyone that they lose on this issue when their agenda is exposed. Which is precisely what we intend to do in 2020. Expose them. To voters they are trying to scare. To people more likely to vote when they know the stakes. /9
