OpenAI lost a lot of researcher respect due to press release-oriented science, early on... it's not fair for junior researchers to get caught up in it, but unsurprising. This was originally under OpenAI branding after all...

It *is* a major problem that wastes human resources. There are good papers that clearly place themselves in the methodology space before going into implementation details. New entrants benefit from understanding that an approach is not new but the details/application are.
