I find this is usually followed by a request to invest at an eye-popping valuation, with an explanation that YC is "value-add" which is why they got to invest at 1/5th the price of what I'd get to.

It's essentially prisoners dilemma: - if some startups raise beforehand they get good deals, but everyone assumes the companies left at demo day are those that no-one else wanted - If all startups wait for demo day, valuations get pushed up for everyone
