Two types of preschool tours: 1. As you can see, our four year olds are currently voting on a model UN resolution. Over there is our lizard collection. 2. These are all four walls of our building. Indoor plumbing is included. We try hard not to let a stranger pick up your kid.

This seems well-intentioned but ultimately net-negative for its purported beneficiaries. Does anyone have a steelman argument in support of it? 🤔

Book rec: Red Plenty Nominally historical fiction about USSR economists and politicians pushing and pulling against market reforms in the 50s-70s. But really a genre-defying, surprisingly expansive overview of life in the system.

It's fascinating what minutiae you learn when consuming a new type of financial product. Today's example: there are apparently multiple ways to calculate interest on a loan and banks prefer one particularly sneaky method called 365/360.

The shortcomings of modern medicine really come into focus when acting on behalf of a child. 1st opinion: “You need to fix this. It could lead to worse things. Come back every three months.” 2nd opinion: “Don’t worry about it. No need to do anything. Come back in a year.” 🤷🏼‍♂️

Great essay. I hosted a gathering of my highschool's advisory board yesterday. My axe to grind was that we ought to remind students & parents that many ambitious and interesting life paths arise only if you shirk the endless optimization toward the objective function of others.

Sunday project: I found an AP article where my dad is quoted on the day we arrived in the US. But I can't seem to find any newspapers where it ran, at least via Google. Any ideas on other ways to find out if it ran in print? 🙏

If you're trying to make sense of the incentives in the healthcare system, this take from the perspective of a cash-only, price-transparent surgery center is very illuminating.

(As a former YCer, I have given the "don't talk to investors" advice and I get it. Just found this amusing.)

Cold email: "Hi, can you review our YC app?" Me: "Sure. I've marked it up." Them: "We got an interview. Any advice?" Me: "Sure. Here are my tips." Them: "Thanks. Can we come show you our prototype?" Me: "Sure. Come over." Them: "We got in. And we're not supposed to talk to you."
