    Norman received his PhD in 1965 & began a career at the NIH. His body of work comprises impressive strides in research that benefits all of humankind. One of his published studies, “Bactericidal Antibody to Escherichia Coli in Germ-Free Mice” remains a benchmark in the field.

    Despite this heartbreak, Norman still served in the US Army proudly. While in combat in 1944, he suffered a devastating injury to his femur. He received a Purple Heart & Bronze Star for his service, but his long recovery also led him to a passion for microbiology & immunology.

    Shortly after, his family was forced into an internment camp. Norman was heartbroken as he visited his family in the camp—and although he wore his United States Army uniform, he was treated with suspicion as he checked in with officials.

    He was a happy child despite his family living under the shadow of racism against Japanese people—an unfair bias that only worsened after Pearl Harbor in World War. After the attacks, he put his love for science and pre-med college plans aside to serve in the US Army.
