    These articles were alleging that a few drops of excess GHB would make the difference between life and death. Presumably this guy was dosing his victims at 5g+ (there have been reference to use of shot glasses which, at 25ml, might suggest doses of around 12.5g GHB!). Frightening

    This is the nub of Hitchens's thinking. A moralist puritanical Christian loathing of pleasure and the thought that drugs can produce it. The idea that relief of suffering or desire to experience non-ordinary conscious states might be the goal doesn't even enter the imagination

    Pleasure, at the expense of others if necessary. There, I've considered the root causes of all drug abuse. Next?

    Not only can you not move in Colorado without encountering some 'marijuana'-crazed lout who wants to do some unspeakable evil, somehow the public are so deluded that they, in record numbers, want this evil plant legalised everywhere!

    It is the biggest killer because it is already legal. Legalise marijuana and its toll of misery will quickly be far greater than that of alcohol. But I don't notice the BBC making a joke out of drunk driving or domestic violence in its major dramas.

    Peter Hitchens's mental state is declining day by day. 'Marijuana' especially, but also steroids and antidepressants will drive you to a murderous rampage, as will merely 'hanging around with drug gangs' - never jihadism or alcohol or tobacco though

    People are being extraordinarily reckless and that’s what’s getting them into trouble. I’ve taken more than 10,000 doses of GHB over 7 years, usually measured with 2.5ml syringe, at most 3.1g KGHB every 2.5 hours, and only twice has it put me to sleep. On both occasions I /4

    about. It's ccaremongering to refer to it as a ‘coma’. There are thousands of narcolepsy patients taking 2 doses a night of 4.5g NaGHB (a far higher dose than I’ve ever taken) and they’re not being rendered comatose twice a night! It’s also not ‘hard’ to get the dosing right. /3

    told that it’s 1ml that will have this effect. There are a lot of drops in 1ml, and an excess even of 1ml GBL above a normal recreational dose (equivalent to about 1.65g Na (sodium) GHB) will not produce death but will probably produce deep sleep, which is what we’re talking /2

    Some really dreadful and hysterical information in this Vice article on GHB/GBL - 'the downsides of taking just a drop too much include a high risk of death, or at the very least being put into a coma' - totally untrue and elsewhere we are /1

    I have sometimes wondered if the religion would be pro-suicide if it didn't accept karma and rebirth (and held that death was really final), and so if Buddha, realising he would be creating a very short-lived cult if he did so, retained belief in it to benefit more future people

    I don't think most people appreciate that the Buddha thought existence itself to be a deplorable condition. See final lines of - in which we are told that continued existence even up to the length of time it takes to snap the fingers, is a bad thing

    The dogmatically confident idiocy of this man will never cease to amaze me. He knows better about the etiology of delirium tremens just as he knew better than David Nutt et als Lancet paper on comparative drug harms ()

    You may have misunderstood me. I do not think DTs are a symptom of withdrawal. I think they are a consequence of sustained heavy drinking, which may in some circumstances be *triggered* (bot not caused) by reduced or interrupted consumption.
