We are so proud today to bring you Books We Love, NPR’s annual guide to our favorite books of the year. We have dedicated this edition of BWL to our friend and colleague, books editor Petra Mayer, 1974-2021.🧵 1/7

  7. The chicken cake became a permanent feature of Chicken Bowl. Often Petra would bake it, but if she wasn't available, she'd recruit another NPR baker to bring one without my having to ask. Her tradition will live on. (Thanks to Claire Calhoun for the photo!)

  8. Petra Mayer baked for lots of people, for lots of reasons. A few years back, she showed up at my Super Bowl party -- "Chicken Bowl," which includes a fried-chicken-eating contest -- hoisting this masterpiece. You can tell it's Petra's handiwork from that perfectly sardonic eye.

  9. oh, nothing, just New York Times best-selling author Linda Holmes, announcing the follow-up to her New York Times best-selling debut novel Evvie Drake Starts Over -- which was, it should be noted, a New York Times best-seller

  10. Gutted by the loss of my dear friend Petra Mayer, who was — among so many other superlatives — the most wonderful kind of nerd: open-minded, open-hearted, fearless and abundant and joyful in her enthusiasm. I will miss her so goddamned much.

Talked about w/ & on . Things I mentioned: Why the open-ended ending was reflective of K-Dramas, the subtitles and, um, Snidely Whiplash. Hope you enjoy it! 🦑🎮
