In which a top GOP pollster concluded in a memo to the party's leaders that Fox News' coronavirus coverage was going to get their base -- and a lot of other people -- killed. https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/2020/04/04/coronavirus-government-dysfunction/?arc404=true …pic.twitter.com/WaJKqdbxYn

I was thinking about this last night. This has the potential to blow up the GOP's stranglehold on Southern evangelicals. Those folks may be tyrannical and dumb, but they aren't volunteers for a suicide pact. As they bury their fallen, they will remember all this.

No, they're not volunteers for a suicide pact, but they'll edit their memories gladly to adopt a more favorable view of what happened. They will be thankful to the heroism of the President for stopping travel from China in time to prevent 100K deaths from ballooning to millions.

Many of them will cling to something like that. But enough of them will flip hard to disrupt the stranglehold. IMO anyway.

Hannity is already claiming he sounded the alarm from beginning and it was Dems who were dismissive. The Fox viewership will Not remember anything.

I live among them. There aren't actually as many of those types as you must think. Most of them aren't really religious at all, but go to church, usually nondenominational, to see and be seen. The hypocrisy runs deep in that movement.

Perhaps, but it will be trivially easy to convince them to blame China and Pelosi for it. Scapegoating is part of why they signed up in the first place.https://twitter.com/iconoplasty/status/1246483536712019969 …

Southern evangelicals will likely use this to further their belief they’re being persecuted for their views and/ or add it to the end of times rapture narrative. Honestly, evangelicals have been eagerly awaiting a time such as this.

The belief that their god will protect them is strong. Also, they believe what happens is the will of that god - be it widespread illness, death, or a crashing economy. It is a cultural refusal to accept any actual, reality-based truth.
