  3. This is only the second time Ancestry has been asked to hand over DNA data to the government. They complied with one in 2014. As much as there's a big (and valid) privacy concern, the government really isn't raiding these kinds of companies.

  5. Bizarre. Especially when the CEO told me it was what they did in December.

  6. Senator Wyden comment in: “Avast’s past practice of marrying antivirus software with the secret mining of consumers’ data was a terrible move. But the decision today to shutter its data broker subsidiary is a model for how companies should respond to criticism of privacy abuses."

  12. It's a serious reversal from Avast. It has even bought back the 35% share of Jumpshot (its data selling subsidiary) it sold to Ascential in order to shut it down... It's ditching tens of millions of yearly revenue in the process.

  13. New - Avast is going to stop selling your web browsing history. Massive privacy win after , and articles led to a big furore...

  14. They’re testing out their facial recognition glasses too... when I asked if they were going to be used as part of the massive Moscow rollout, they said: “Not yet.”

What really cracked me up in researching this story was a case where the gov clearly just copied and pasted a list of telecoms providers they wanted data from... Including ones that haven't existed for well over a decade! Gotta lol @ the laziness :)

In 2019, Trump’s reelection campaign spent $20m on 218,100 Facebook ads. We built a database to analyze them all. What we found: beneath the xenophobia and invective is a massive, mundane clickbait operation designed to harvest supporter data

New - The government can't get message content from WhatsApp, but it sure can get creative in order to track a user. To find a DEA most-wanted, a single order demanded data from a seemingly-endless number of tech companies, WhatsApp and Google included.

  19. From what I understand, WhatsApp simply can't/won't provide data like the “identity of all accounts that are linked to the account by cookies” or “IP addresses of any websites or other servers to which the cell phone device or devices connected.”

1/2 Its a strategy to move forward with their larger goal of forcing backdoors into products. They make crazy request and kinda hope they don't get approved and use that as ammo if they don't. They want to ware out the Tech companies for fulfilling these request.

Since we are doing appreciation tweets. When he and hired me to cover the Middle East, Ben said he might disagree with, or even hate, some of my reporting. “That’s a good thing, fight me on it,” was roughly what he said. What a beautiful thing.
