    This is something that does much better. They know visualizations can be misleading, and choose designs that prioritize clarity over flashiness. And they openly discuss leaning towards conservative algorithmic decisions when information quality is low.

    I'd be willing to bet that there's a breakdown in editorial oversight going on behind the scenes... where tweaks to the needle's algorithm are made with less scrutiny than an article conveying the same message would garner.

    Their own reporting shows how poorly managed the results from Iowa have been. It's reckless for them to have made as bold a prediction as they did.

    “The Needle” is a joke. And it’s embarrassing that it’s the ’s visualization of choice in a multi-way election. It’s incredibly naive (or egotistical, or maybe even biased if your a conspiracy theorist) to forecast the Iowa chaos as definitely as they did.

    Google has fired five employees for organizing in the span of a month with no consequences. Management read the situation correctly and decided that the employees left standing wouldn't walk out or do anything except get mad on internal message boards. It's depressing as hell.

    And then, you go one step further… drop the dependencies array altogether and compute the dependencies from the source. With release-pegging still in the lockfile. But not using URLs… using the same unique slugs for packages we already use. (Slugs are a useful abstraction!)

    Most of this should be automated by something like Dependabot for non-breaking changes anyways. 🔥: Hell, `package.dependencies` could be an array instead of an object even. Keep all the release-pegging logic in the lockfile, and just keep track of what's available.

    Is this crazy? People just use the default semver range when adding a dependency. Why not hardcode the version in package.json? And then just ask in the upgrade flow whether you want to bump up a patch, minor, or major? No need to pre-declare how you want to upgrade.

    I think the more important part isn't semver, but the idempotent storage of each release? Seems like semver could be done only when upgrading. And wouldn't need to live in `package.json` or be recognized by the registry at all.

    So interesting to read about the tradeoffs when making decisions like these. And it’s cool that Figma is able to rethink decades-old precedent and come up with new solutions. Really inspiring.

    Away is known for their minimalist luggage, and marketing that paints a picture of aspirational travel. It’s a vision that many employees bought into when they decided to come work at the company. But that’s not how it turned out
