Great piece by in exploring how photography in archives is transforming historical research. Fantastic analysis with lots of thoughtful historian commentary, including my presentation which kicked the conversation off!

It’d be neat to see this study in the Canadian context. My sense is that there’s more political diversity, at least re: Liberal vs. NDP. But I know a few colleagues who have voted Conservative, and they aren’t scared to share that. My department might be an outlier tho. 🤷‍♂️

I'm pretty sure that without I wouldn't be doing what I do today. It was a Great Lakes THATCamp in 2010 that probably turned me on to this previously-unknown world of "digital humanities" and "digital history." 😢

320 events from 2008-2020, over 10K attendees, and had a great impact, I think, on the peer-to-peer, helpful dissemination of digital humanities. Kudos to for much management over this period, & a shout out to all of my friends from who launched/ran THATCamp.

Just arrived in Wuhan, the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak, which has been under lockdown for more than a week now. The mood among locals: anxiety, flashes of anger & frustration, and extreme boredom. Here I am getting my temperature measured in a hotel lobby.

I dunno what was worse... the crying of my thirteen-month old daughter or the thirteen different variations on “Baby Shark” that I used to stop said crying... 🦈

Revising a book chapter right now. It is not easy or profitable but it's a pretty good excuse to look at great books! HT and more

FWIW I’m non-partisan in my scholarship – which yeah yeah is political in and of itself – but at least in the Canadian political spectrum I view conservative voices as part of our tent of discourse (different in the US: I think Trump is aberrant in a way Harper wasn’t).

I wonder if they’re feeling the need to obscure their public positions in their scholarship, or just on social media? The latter tends to bring out the worst in us, but I like to think editors are even-handed and non-partisan in their scholarship… (he says, cautiously)

We need to push back against the idea that academics' entire public-facing lives should be represented as 'public intellectuals' absent humanity, emotion, or common social function. Frankly, it's those who do present themselves that way 100% of the time you should worry about.

If and you don’t mind me saying, this is the debate to have, about doing good history. I might agree w you Chris on the homogeneity (+mea culpa); however agree w you both that we won’t get better history by adding more diversity of partisans.

An internet that never forgets is threatening teenagers’ abilities to explore new ideas and identities and mess up without consequences. And this isn’t bad news only for them, but for society at large.

Watching the tweets over the last few days, I worry that some people end up reading every news event as a live show. The urge is not to be informed, but entertained. Viral producers that kick up the drama win.
