6/ Audience member: “One of the biggest opportunities for decentralized social networks is to connect based on what you’ve probably done vs what you’ve said or who you say you are.”
7/ @rabble on how social media today is broken because of how we govern these “digital commons”pic.twitter.com/9EmzsdaNG7
9/ @rabble is building a new social networking app called Planetary built on Scuttlebuttpic.twitter.com/wiyRtjrRS8
10/ @rabble believes future of decentralized social networks will be:
- encrypted and private
- data stored by friends not centrally
- smaller groups
- subscription based business model
- among others...

12/ Matthew: “We thought decentralized communication was going to be the hard part. But we realized the hardest part is decentralized reputation.”
Deployed decentralized reputation system in November 2019 with Matrix and @mozilla communities.pic.twitter.com/L4LqAJh9qm
13/ Matthew: We are now looking to evolve Matrix from a federated to peer-to-peer network. Check them out: https://matrix.org

15/ @johnconorryan from @dweb @internetarchive on walled gardens.
First: why do walled gardens prosper today? Because they make a LOT of money for *some* people.pic.twitter.com/n6PqjKEAWN
17/ @johnconorryan: the U.S. telecommunications industry used to look like today’s walled gardens on the internet.
It wasn’t until the late 1940s that these 6 things were in place to make telecommunications flow freely and seamlessly between telecommunications networks.pic.twitter.com/NlCooVvdSc

24/ Attendee lightning talk: Proof of personhood vs bots on decentralized social networks will be important. He is building a startup going after this.
25/ @hylo, a collaborative social network, is porting to @holochainpic.twitter.com/2NkX31HMe6
26/ Interesting that @holochain acquired @hylo (I think I caught that right) and is using Hylo as its flagship app.
I think it’s possible that we’ll see more of this: well-funded crypto projects acquiring startups to go to market with a live application. TBD if this will work.
27/ My main takeaways: 1) There’s an emerging need to redesign social with decentralized technologies. 2) Something is starting to brew. Something big will emerge. 3) Still seems early as clarity in vision, path, and value creation & capture is not there yet.
28/ I’ve been looking to invest in and help build a decentralized social network project/startup for the last 2 years. If you’re working on something, send me a DM!
