The reality is that anyone is capable of forming independent moral judgements regardless of their background. We are not defined, good or bad, by decisions made for us when we were children.

I agree - in fact, I don't think it's hypocritical to send your children to private school while supporting a change in the system. But this line seems to generate an instinctive response. I think this policy is more of a presentational minefield than the left realise.

Instinctively feel there is more sympathy for change than media recognise. But you need to go careful and I'm not sure that's something Labour is capable of right now.

Also many schools are “private” just because they became fee-paying because they couldn’t afford to keep going otherwise. They’re not posh or elite.

Yes, this is missing from the debate. People seem to think all are like Eton, not of the small one down the road that's a bit shabby, but nurtures better/supports dyslexic children better. Where the parents can't always afford it, but are trying for the sake of their child(ren).

Not all private school parents are wealthy. Some pupils win scholarships with vastly reduced fees. Others are on bursaries. "Ordinary"parents choose private schools for a variety of reasons e.g. bullying at a previous school or school phobia in a huge comprehensive.

My mother came from a poor working class family in Feltham. She won a scholarship to Lady Eleanor Hollies school in Hampton. She had to leave in her early teens to go out to work and support family when her father died.

I'm shocked that Labour needed to make this so divisive. The charitable status is what sticks in my throat. Make them businesses and tax them accordingly. Stops them getting lottery money to build swimming pools because they pay for 1 "potted plant" to come a year.

Ch Trusts offer bursaries up to 100%. This may come from donations (not percentage of paying parents fees). All my kids would be in private schools if I could afford it. I work my socks off to make sure my kids will do the same to be able to pay for their kids private education.

I think that's true of all questions of economic justice, though. Either it's "politics of envy" or "you can't be a socialist if you drink in Starbucks".
