An outstanding piece by ⁦⁩ from ground zero in Wuhan, showing the desperation of people who can’t even get tested for the coronavirus. via

A virtuoso reconstruction by and with help from a dozen other reporters on the ground in China, and top-notch editors. This is not commentary but real reporting talking to real health care workers in Wuhan. Truly a must-read.

The truth behind the dramatic US airlift from Wuhan--most seats went to diplomats, the remainder sold at inflated prices. The 1,000 US citizens left behind, including some with newborns, feel abandoned. This feels like the USG looking after its own.

Here's the English-translation of "Ruyan@sars.come" by Ragged Banner Press. It's a very good read and his description of the heroine, Ruyan, was sensitive and helped account for the book's popularity

In this talk I asked Hu if he thought another SARS scandal could occur. It was 2016 and I was skeptical that word could still get out. What he said was prescient: "speaking about China generally, I think that once you open some windows, you can’t close them."

For context to the coronavirus, here's a 2016 interview I did with Wuhan writer Hu Fayun, whose novel on SARS was a national bestseller. Hu (now living abroad) describes a woman who discovers the Internet and tries to publicize the outbreak.

Must read from (particularly if you are not in Wuhan but panicking about the new virus) on why Beijing is prone to grandiose measures in moments of crisis.

The smartest thing on the coronavirus, by : "The Chinese government is going all-out because it knows the people don’t entirely trust it." But, he also adds that folks are ultimately fine with the state's authoritarianism:

As a podcast-aholic I found this piece by really illuminating--who's fact-checking the podcasts? Apparently no one, so they run all sorts of nonsense, especially the most popular ones allegedly telling "true" stories from history.

"The new virus’s death toll has just exceeded 130; for context about 15 million Americans have been sickened by the seasonal flu so far in the 2019-2020 flu season, and 8,200 have died from it." A needed reality check by

How China's coronavirus is part of a bigger problem: human hyperactivity. By "We invade tropical forests and other wild landscapes, which harbor so many species of animals and plants — and within those creatures, so many unknown viruses."

“Often in new outbreaks, the most serious or severe cases are recognized first,” and that may result in a skewed picture of just how dangerous the virus truly is.
