Seasonal winds pick up moisture over the warm Sea of Japan and form snow clouds that produce some of the driest, lightest powder in the world. Niseko United is one of the few resorts that benefits from this ocean-effect, receiving an average of 80-100 days of snowfall per season.

My word for 2023 is community, and also grounding. I want to focus on building community this year. But I also know I need to ground myself and my work. In detail, in specificity, in appreciation of the story I am telling - which is for my community too.

I am Joan & Joe Bowser’s daughter. I am Miranda Bowser’s mother. I am an ANC commissioner, a ward Councilmember, & I am your Mayor. I am standing here today, honored to have taken this oath of office for the third time. And what is it they say about third times: they’re a charm.

2023 - Giving good advice to family and friends doesn’t make you a guru. Especially if it’s common sense. Be open to growth and reasonably self critical !

My power’s really low, so this may be the last image I can send. Don’t worry about me though: my time here has been both productive and serene. If I can keep talking to my mission team, I will – but I’ll be signing off here soon. Thanks for staying with me.
Wide-angle photo from NASA’s InSight lander on Mars shows the area in front of the lander in the late afternoon sun. Two science instruments tethered to the lander rest on the sandy surface nearby. Part of the lander’s robotic arm is visible extending down from the top left. Distortion from the wide-angle lens bends the distant horizon into a curved shape, while low-angle sunlight causes a small bluish lens flare on the right side.
