So please don't talk to me about how we need to use greenbelt land. We don't. We need to stop profiteering property speculation and build housing in cities, where it's needed the most.

How many homes could be built into that space, enriching the local community? How many people could have already been homed had development started as soon as Central St Martins vacated in 2011?

This is the Central St Martins building on Red Lion Square. It has been empty for quite a few years, but since 2020 has had planning permission on it... for a 447 bed hotel. Just 34 affordable homes will be constructed as part of the project.

Or maybe - and hear me out here - reuse the huge amount of empty office and retail space, plus the swathes of speculative empty property (particularly in London).

This brilliant clip from tonight’s News at 10 hits the nail on the head about why we have the spiralling house prices and rents we do. NIMBYism in relation to both the green belt and brownfield sites is making buying or renting homes unaffordable for ordinary people.

This is basically going to give Labour another couple of points lead. Leaving aside that it's terrible economics and will condemn more people to absolute poverty, it's such bad politics I genuinely wonder if she will last two years.

“Tax cuts for the rich” is not what I expected the new PM to say on the eve of taking office

One more note: a common theme in countries which are collapsing is a succession of short-lived leaders, followed by a "strong man" who people think will dig them out of crisis, but who actually destroy their democracy.

Unless, of course, the Tories dump her as polls show the decline in their support that's inevitable if she follows through on these insane policies and messages. They'll bring back Johnson, of course, hoping for a "Boris bounce" (hey Daily Fail, you can have that line for free)

Well, Truss is already shaping up to be the worst PM in British history. How much damage can an extremist do to the country in two years? Guess we're about to find out!

Liz Truss says “it is fair” that her national insurance cut will benefit the richest to the tune of about £2k and do relatively little for the lowest paid. She argues there has been too much focus on the distribution of income in the past twenty years.

In a few years, there will be a convo at work where someone will incredulously say… They just fired me like that Or They won’t pay my overtime Or I get no sick pay And they’ll say they don’t understand why …and someone will explain to them, this is all thanks to Brexit.

NYTimes/CNN 1941: In what was billed as a response to the Pearl Harbor attack, President Roosevelt made a partisan attack against fascism, refusing to extend an olive branch to the domestic right-wing America First movement who has sided with Hitler.

Fuck the Daily Mail.

Me, phoning up the hacks to help and urge on an absurd screeching campaign of panic and terror, to our mutual benefit: Wahey, this is awesome, go democracy and accountability! Me, watching them do the same thing again and again for their own benefit only: Boo, this is an outrage

The vast majority of small businesses simply can't afford bills like this, particularly when they are still paying back loans and trying to make back shortfalls in income caused by the pandemic.

my current energy bill for my tiny 22 cover restaurant is £2,928 a year. This is my new quote. Unsure what to actually do next but as a business that cost would now be more than I pay in rent and more than I take some months. I simply don’t have the money for this.
