“You have too much social influence upon you. You are not going by your own nature. People do so many nonsensical life-negative things because they don’t want to be left out of the scene around them.” ― Sadhguru ☀️

We're aware of a video circulating online that shows a young girl being attacked on a bus, possibly in the West Midlands. Officers are investigating. Anyone with information is asked to get in touch quoting log number 814 of 28/01/20.

Writing A-Z: Z is for 'Zeppelin', a poem from my 'Unspoken Understanding' collection which was inspired by aerial attacks on Southend in the Great War. I hope you've enjoyed my A-Z. It's been fun putting it together.

Writing A-Z: Y is for Yearsleys in Essex. There aren't many! I researched my family back to 1760s Manchester for a uni essay. My great-grandfather joined the army in 1858 and was posted to Colchester, where he married a local girl and established the Essex line.

The WWI film 1917 is in cinemas. Canal Du Nord, in 1917, witnessed the ‘last stand’ of Company D of the 13th Essex Regiment , (The West Ham Battalion nicknamed the Hammers) . More in ‘They Did Their Duty Essex Farm’ in bookshops or online

Writing A-Z: X is for Xylonite, a celluloid-like substance once manufactured at Brantham in Suffolk. I wrote about it in my book "Dedham, Flatford and East Bergholt: A Pictorial History". Here's a pic from there of the British Xylonite Company's band.

Not to mention some books published since and a BBC Essex piece you were featured in! Here's a little help for anyone wanting to consult your MA thesis.

Writing A-Z: W is for Wivenhoe Park, home of the University of Essex, where I obtained an MA in History. My dissertation was about population migration in the Rochford Hundred in the 19th century. This and my other essays about Essex are available for consultation .

Writing A-Z: V is for Visitors' Books, especially at Essex churches. I've signed over 400 of those, some of them many times! Here's a poem from my 'Tears of Poignancy' collection which was inspired by visits to redundant churches, especially at Birch and Stansted Mountfitchet.

Writing A-Z: U is for 'Unspoken Understanding', the title of both my second poetry collection and one of my poems. Here's a poem from that collection about the 7th-century chapel of St Peter-on-the-Wall at Bradwell in Essex. It's well worth a visit!

Writing A-Z: T is for several connected things - my poetry collection 'Tears of Poignancy', my poem 'The Essex Marshlands' and the village of Tollesbury, which inspired it. The two characters in the poem are me at 18 and 28, demonstrating how age can alter a person's perspective.

Writing A-Z: S is for Southend-on-Sea, where I've lived since 1972. I've written about it more than anywhere else, including in 'A History of Southend' and 'Southend in 50 Buildings'. Here's a pic of one of the buildings - it's where I've worked for the best part of 30 years!
