Here is the best scene from the Christmas Carol from 1938. Bob Cratchit's family REALLY loves that goose. Enjoy.pic.twitter.com/XcooTkhtdZ

I can't imagine this bodes well for any of us. Actual influencers, the aspiring influencers, those who see influencers as de facto cool. I mean, what happens when people most aspire to becoming ideal consumers?

So it's not JUST about faux-sponcon as a means of padding a resume. It's about using it as a means of signaling membership in that class for its own sake, to say "I am one of the cool people." And the net effect of this is that corporations have people advertising FOR FREE.

And they've made it COOL to do this. It's not just the money that top-level influencers can bring in. It's the perception of glamour associated with a job predicated solely on consumerist consumption.

I can't underscore enough how messed up this is. Corporations have created a cultural identity that is—at its core and in its entirety—about being a consumer. Buying makeup and clothes, going to certain bars and restaurants: this is the entirety of the identity.

People so badly want to become "infuencers" (read, "professional consumer") that they've begun using both the linguistic and visual grammar of influencers to appear like they're posting sponsored content.https://twitter.com/TheAtlantic/status/1075078440724901888 …

Heist movies have a lot more action nowadays. A French crime movie from the 1970s would be a 10-minute shot of someone dragging on a cigarette while leaning on a car, some driving footage, and a wideshot of a man falling over from a heart attack in a snowy field
