Can't recommend this enough for anyone interested in how to achieve change around complex social policy challenges (not talking about it and drawing nice diagrams, but actually doing the long, hard work)

Think I might start again with Twitter, just follow people posting about sandwiches and Steely Dan. The ultimate timeline cleanse.

Very rare that "Britain's most trusted man" gets stuck in politically, so it's telling that he's jumped straight on this.

The twin morals of this thread: don't use net promoter scores and never, ever send me a survey.

I think this would provide much more useful data about people's journeys, including the one thing (punctuality) that is largely out of the bus company's control and yet massively impacts of people's views of the service.

Three questions in the survey. 1. Did you arrive at your destination on time? 2. Did the service meet all your needs? (If not why not?) 3. Did the journey as a whole fall short of, meet, or exceed your expectations? Ok, four questions if you're being picky.

Even allowing for the fact that maybe other people are less anally retentive than I am, I can't believe this question is yielding any useful data for a bus company. So I humbly propose an alternative approach.

If I've had a bad journey, I give a petulant one out of ten. Simply because that's how you exact punishment through a net promoter question and nothing puts me in the mood for punishment than standing in the cold at a bus stop for half an hour.

If I've had a good journey recently, I give a middling score (because I still think the buses should be better and for that reason I bristle at 'recommending' them. My four out of ten says "I recommend you live in a city with better buses!")

Bearing all this in mind, how do I fill out the survey, which I have done several times? Well, pretty inconsistently.

(There is a second question asking you to rate the specific journey, so the net promoter question seems to be asking about general experiences. But the survey is titled "How was your journey?", which seems to contradict that.)

    3. Consistency. Unlike many services, the experience of buses varies hugely depending on route and time, the variation in Leeds specifically being from 'just about acceptable' to 'beyond awful'.

    2. Context. Given that, am I recommending whether someone chooses to take the bus instead of walking? Driving? Staying at home instead? Not clear from the question.

    1. Competition. Where I live, I have a decent choice of buses but they are all provided by , so I have no meaningful comparison for their service.

The first question in this survey uses a net promoter score scale ("would you recommend us to others"). This is an awkward question to answer in this context for three reasons.

I regularly receive a survey from about their buses. As someone with a professional interest in research methods and much more pressing work to finish this afternoon, I naturally have some views which I am happy to share.

Saw this last night and it's very good. We were sworn to secrecy on the content but I will say I didn't realise just how busy Chris Morris kept animal handlers through the 90s.

Not bought any music in a while because too preoccupied with less fun stuff, so tell me what I should get. Bonus points for big drums, in the mood for that sort of thing.
