Hmm 🤔… “reluctant to send papers they’d have previously given and chance” “to protect the authors from public criticism” sounds to me like REs are still not buying into the new model. If a journal gave me that as an excuse, I’d honestly never go back to it.

Third, some REs are reluctant to send papers that they previously would have "given a chance" under the old eLife model if they think the reviews will be critical in order to protect the authors from public criticism.
totally expected outcome of the new model. Editor gatekeeping as paramount decision.

If I read this correctly, the first three months of @eLife new model reveal a 73% desk rejection rate. am I misreading? This is 'as good as' @Nature (80%). I thought this was doing away w/ the journal culture. Are there really so many #preprints not eLife worthy?

Our new paper: As the biggest scandal in French clinical research looms, it's time to understand how a publication of very low scientific relevance was used to push people to believe in the effectiveness of a "miracle" treatment - and why it should be retracted. twitter.com/ericbillyfr/st…

A fantastic new model of cross-institutional peer review of preprints that offers more opportunity for ECRs, their skill development and a reward/crediting system. What’s not to like?

And ‘anti-woke’ warriors. It’s now a platform that lets those who either pay, or shout the loudest set the tone/course of conversation. When you have a platform that actively pushes untruths & hatred above facts or reality, racism misogyny, homophobia, & transphobia will thrive.

I have been thinking a lot lately about how our experiences as scientists are shaped so much by the politics of our times. I’m disappointed that we continue to use this app (for the lack of an adequate alternative) that amplifies all of the awfulness, anti-science, anti-justice,

This is a sobering discussion about the realities of scientists being trolled & abused for who they are and what they study. The unsurprising answer they come to on “who are these trolls” might still shock many. I’m not shocked, but I’m still sad about the state of this app.

Really important message here 👇🏾. Our research group has been discussing quite a lot about keeping up with new tech in image analysis and responsible use of AI in science research. Regulation of AI more broadly and improving digital literacy must feature high on our priorities.

This is just out. I'd love you to read it. A story of journeys. Roadies with my bestie, Tim. And my own journey to better understand the profound & ongoing impact of colonisation, versus the weightlessness of (my) privilege. We can do better. If we try.

I loathe the phrase ‘publish or perish’. As if we weren’t all under enough pressure, academics seem to relish adding life-and-death metaphors into the mix. Here are some top tips for publishing from your PhD 👇 A thread 🧵
