I’ve seen more of this in last few years than in first 10 I lived here. Anecdata: Quality of life as high as ever. Foreign employers increasingly likely to be OK with remote over the Pacific or have local offices. Perceived lower difficulty of living in Tokyo w/o JP ability.https://twitter.com/kchoudhu/status/994500431496843264 …

It depends. An engineering status of residence in Japan is strictly better than an H1B in at least one regard: it attaches to the worker not the job, so as long as you continue working in engineering (broadly defined), you can change jobs w/o having to reapply.

Thank you, sounds more sensible. What about if you get laid off?

The status of residence is yours until it expires. You can find other employment that is valid on the same stats and that's fine, your new employer will be the one to fill out the paperwork when it's time to renew (or change status)

Availability is another question. Contingent on there being a large Japanese company in the mix issuance is almost certain; gets more dicey for other circumstances. (I am aware of startups getting it but don’t think 100% insurance like the base case.)

Thanks. Supposedly an American MNC falls somewhere between those two extremes (e.g. Stripe)
