You're in this case technically right as far as law is concerned. 498A is bad, period. Even those who're not related can be named, and would have to therefore stand trial. A sibling's friend had such misfortune to be going through a divorce, and friends were named in FIR.
Pardon my ignorance/stupidity, can you explain how 498a is worse for joint families?

It's not too hard to hard to imagine a joint family where the high earners are accused, and financial effects of such can be more devastating for more people. False allegations are aplenty under 498A, many cases have become known where people used it for extortion.

IIRC there was a petition filed by @/madhukishwar & @/DeepikaBhardwaj for a review. I was shocked to learn that they didn't call for repeal of non-bailable clause. No one seemingly cares for "innocent until proven guilty" bit...

Yeah that part is long gone. See that jurisprudence was pioneered by Western feminists. It's not as bad in Amrika cos they got some pushback from right-wing legal community, but it's still pretty bad. In India they have free reign!
