I agree with @MattBruenig Singapore's combination of markets & substantial state ownership wd be regarded as unacceptable socialism by most centre-right people in USA or UK. But don't forget Singapore doesn't let the Bruenigs of the world run the place :-)http://peoplespolicyproject.org/2018/03/09/how-capitalist-is-singapore-really/ …

Many people missed my point: Singapore cuts both ways. State interventions which depart from the neutral night-watchman model are not necessarily "pro-labour". Singapore is a pro-business (de facto) one-party state with a credible commitment to being pro-business.

Likewise I've always noted, the centre-left also project much onto East Asia & its industrial policies because they were not ‘neoliberal’. But East Asian developmental states pursued pro-business & capital-friendly policies & they should not be mistaken for ‘progressive’.

Replying to @pseudoerasmus
Now that the western left isn’t particularly pro-labor, the East Asian model must seem very attractive in how it gives power to the bureaucracy while being ostensibly pro-business and economic growth.

That assumes they wish to let go of the bioleninism instead of doubling down.

i mean about economic policy. To some extent Japan/Korea have been able to avoid bioleninism by having the bureaucracy control very effectively all powers of the state.

Yeah but you can't separate the structure from the policy

Because the structure nullifies the need for certain policies and enables others.

to a point. There’s always some margin for discretion. Structure isn’t everything.
