Both Iran and Saudi Arabia are repressive countries with oppressive Islamist laws (Iran arrests and tortures more of its OWN people, Saudi has more absurd Islamic regs), but the Q still remains: why is Iran target #1?https://twitter.com/nntaleb/status/945039989431308289 …

OK, why that? there is no historic enmity between Jews and Persians (quite the reverse) and Iran as threat to Israel seems mostly an excuse for something that I have no clue about (i.e. I dont really get it)..
-
No historic enmity. In fact they were strong allies when Shah was in power. Who/what started this enmity? You get the picture

And why Iranian mullahs are anti-Israel: 1) Easy way to claim leadership of Ummah 2) Deflect historical Arab/Sunni anger away from themselves. Same reason many Arab Christian/Druze/Alawite are staunchly anti-Zionist

KSA has a de-facto separation between (pro-West) Caesar and (anti-everyone) Mullah. In Iran, 'death to Great Satan' Mullah is the Caesar who was the pioneer of suicide bombing, embassy hostage taking and global bounty-hunting of blasphemers.

Still, hardly more damage than Pakistan has done, and yet Pakistan is a major Non-Nato ally. What are a few bombings between friends?
-
Pakistan also has de facto separation of Caesar (anti-India, pro-West GHQ) and Mullah (anti-everyone), and US think they can engage the former to tame the latter (not always successfully). No such possibility with Iranian mullahs.

That's a big part of it. But from American perspective, we're still super embarrassed about that whole embassy hostage thing. We make movies about it. We gotta save face. We are a petty people.
