@i_contemplate_@bitemyapp Everything I needed to know to do my job I learned on the job. Period. Post MS EE. -

@Nick_B_Steves@i_contemplate_ EE is pretty different from CS. It's very broad and irregular in what's covered. -
.
@Nick_B_Steves@i_contemplate_ CS varies a lot, but there's a lot of value in post-bacca CS research. -
.
@Nick_B_Steves@i_contemplate_ mentorship is a standard, near universal aspect of post-bacca work. Won't find that in industry. -
.
@Nick_B_Steves@i_contemplate_ in fact, I would argue that if you've already eaten the expense of a 4 year degree, you *should* do a grad -
.
@Nick_B_Steves@i_contemplate_ because that is where much of the benefit of university lies. No degree at all or aim for grad school, IMO. -
@bitemyapp@i_contemplate_ The only benefit to univ whatsoev is a credential that opens a door. Whether it's a net benefit depends on cost. -
@bitemyapp@i_contemplate_ Including the opportunity cost of NOT getting paid 2 or 5 yrs of professional salary. - 9 more replies

@i_contemplate_@Nick_B_Steves past bad technical decisions. Mentorship is rare in software. -
.
@i_contemplate_@Nick_B_Steves it's every coder for themselves, and what mentorship exists will not teach you anything as lasting as acad. -
.
@i_contemplate_@Nick_B_Steves learning actual *CS* is critical for the longevity of your understanding of software. -
.
@i_contemplate_@Nick_B_Steves if you find a software team or company that takes mentorship and ongoing education seriously, never leave. -
@bitemyapp@Nick_B_Steves I was thinking of places like http://www.thehackerati.com/ -
.
@i_contemplate_@Nick_B_Steves looks kitschy and not very deep engineering-wise, but I could of course be wrong. They're app devs. -
.
@i_contemplate_@Nick_B_Steves making my biases plain, I like work that gives an excuse to write things like: https://github.com/bitemyapp/blacktip … - 1 more reply
