I haven't a clue what this pertains to, but Socrates and Pythagoras are both said to have taken physiognomy seriously, and correlations between facial structure and personality have been discussed in the literature.

Would you equate this with modern race theory?

More to the point, do have a source for that claim? Sounds a bit fishy to me.

I mean the part about Socrates and Pythagoras. Even phrenology was taken seriously enough in the 19th century for Hegel to discuss it. Doesn't mean it's not loopy.

Well, facial tells for certain developmental disorders (Down's, Asperger's) are well known, and then there are more broadly applicable findings like these:https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/17470211003770912 …

The story of Socrates and the physiognomist is related by Godwin on page 31 here, and he describes it as "sufficiently known," though I'm not sure of his source: https://archive.org/details/livesnecromance04godwgoog … Having trouble with the Pythagoras account, but it seems to concern Cylon of Croton.

Anyway, I don't know what the original context was that this came up in. I'm just sharing what I'm aware of concerning the validity, however strong or however limited, of craniofacial measurements.

I dont know the context as well but it may have been an inside joke (https://occamsrazormag.wordpress.com/2014/02/13/the-dark-enlightenment-exposed/ …)
