The 'South Asian' label is maybe 50 years old, concocted by the US State Department, seeded into Area Studies programs in US universities.

Culturally it's most often used by commies, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis and enemies of India as an umbrella term to gain respectability themselves.

Yes exactly. That's what I'm counseling against - if Indians didn't go along with it, it wouldn't work.
