I want to say some of that may be selection effects. Honestly I think the # of babies in your immediate social circle is the deciding factor. Other factors careerism, education and cost of living. Not saying it isn't a factor.

Yeah I think I agree. But I also think there's some causative effects. A good friend of mine has always wanted "4 kids" but she got a dog first and now isn't so serious about kids.

You mean a pet owned by one of the spouses before the relationship? I wouldn't expect that to change things.

Yeah so the dog fills that, and without it the kid would happen. That's what I think anyway, mostly though it's selection effects I agree
