They didn't supply to bypassed islands blindly they did retreat from the bypassed islands initially till 1943 post that it became hard considering US superiority.

Japanese strategy was extending the defensive screen further east and deliver a Knock out punch in the process which failed with epic proportions in battle of midway but holding of islands became even more important post dollite raid .
