US strategy was destroying the wall in some places so that they can raid the home islands. Island hopping worked BCS US had industrial strength, numbers and better intelligence .

Japanese strategy was extending the defensive screen further east and deliver a Knock out punch in the process which failed with epic proportions in battle of midway but holding of islands became even more important post dollite raid .

Japanese strategy was akin to building a walk to protect your boundary Japanese entire strategy was about denying airbases to allies so that they can keep home islands out of reach. If they had left any islands allies would have captured them without effort .
