Can someone familiar with parliamentary democracy explain to me how the relatively strong party discipline in such countries (vis-à-vis the US, where party discipline is fairly weak) is enforced?

Parties have stronger control over candidate selection. Primaries are rare. Second, some countries like India have anti-defection laws, making individual mp s serfs.
