Huntington somehow gets away with the truth bomb: Islam and the West have been enemies for fourteen hundred years, and will continue to be for as long as both civilization exist.

Sorry to say but Islam is also BFFs with the Anglo world, and has been for 200 years.https://vajrin.wordpress.com/2015/05/11/lessons-for-hindus-learning-from-a-19th-century-anglo-saxon-study-of-islam-part-1/ …

The hard-on that Victorians had for Islam is hard to overstate now. Kipling considered Hindus to be blathering idiots and Islam to be a 'comprehensible civilization'

Much too much of that, it's true. Sexual disorders of public schoolboys largely to blame.

Always assumed this was less "Mosaic distinction" than continental politics: until the point you're dumb enough to invite them over to live in England, it makes perfect sense to paper over your differences with MENA in order to keep some friendly Mediterranean ports.

The mosaic distinction hypothesis has support from other folks' words as well - like those of macaulay who recommended neutrality between H and M, but if forced to choose, side with M due to fellow 'Abrahamic civ'

Turns out Kipling was either deluded or a sophist. Not terribly surprising. It is evidence that sophists like Islam inherently, not merely for convenience. Perhaps not unrelated to al-Ghazali's victory.

"Enemies" isn't the right word anymore, since Islam only exists because the West is merciful and/or lazy. If the Romans had nuclear bombs it would have been gone already.

you arguably don't need nukes either - just some good ol fashioned entry restrictions, and sanctions especially on leaders - or just install a dozen Mustafa Kemals and Shah Pehlavi with tanks.

That's the recipe for peaceful coexistence. I'm thinking more of the "Create a wasteland and call it peace," form of Roman peace.

Europeans have used Moslems against other Europeans frequently, of course it would make sense they use it against Hindus.

Yeah though what's interesting is that this never ended. The War on Terror is fake from inception, Sponsorship of jihad had only a brief interlude from 2001 to maybe 2007.
