Your developer first API approach makes sense. But have you looked into @discord with always-on audio channels for the matter? =]
I have - love discord!! Think it’s a bit different for the use case tho
well ;-) The difference is that you don't have to persuade a user to install yet another obscure app on their phone - people have discord installed
