I'm going to start teaching programming this coming semester. I haven't finished Wee, so I'm in search for a good programming environment that comes close to QBasic. Quick to draw stuff to the screen, not a lot of ceremony. Suggestions? Currently I think TypeScript + VSC + Chrome

Did you take a look at
#pico8? They have a permissive licence for schools https://www.lexaloffle.com/info.php?page=schools … Also processing as someone already suggested.1 réponse 1 Retweet 2 j'aime -

To limited imo. But it's neat for us old people :D

What age/experience level are you teaching? For younger students, or students new to programming or gamedev, I've found it to be a huge success in teaching them, almost *because* of its limitations. (I'm not negating your statement in your situation, just curious.)

16-18, zero programming experience. Pico8 is great, but there are more capable torture devices.

16-18! So cool and rewarding. I wonder what the male/female ratio gonna be in your group... Hope the ratio will be inspiring:)

I wonder that too. I wanted to meet the students before the first lecture to get an idea where the come from and what their interests are? Guess I'll do that in the first lecture :)

From my experience teens don’t know what they want. Or rather there’d be 1-2 vocal guys with random [strong] opinions on things. So I normally throw in different things and see what generates better group involvement and final results (in any:))

That sounds close to my plan. Thankfully I'm free to experiment, so I hope I can individualize things a little better than in a standard class room environment. (I'll likely fail, but hey, it's a learning experience for everyone involved :D)

Enjoy your time! For me a season in a classroom with kids/teens brings more ideas/experience than a GDC all access pass :)
