I have a very warm heart. It's a lovely story. But I also care for the Venezuelan kids he wants to starve. And for Ed Snowden and Chelsea Manning, whom he wants to see in jail. Maybe he should just stay in South Bend and do good works.

This reminds me. More people should know that ER translators are unsung heros of the medical field. They don’t receive enough thanks.

That's the only thing making me skeptical of the story... Most hospitals have translator services at the ready for these situations because of their necessity. I don't doubt a dude like Pete would do this, but it's hard to fully buy this without knowing which hospital it was

I worked closely with a hospital serving crime victims in a Midwestern state capital, and can tell you they absolutely did *not* have Arabic translators on standby Spanish, yes - but other languages often had long waits or used a phone service

It's the phone service piece I:m talking about. This isn't really coming from me, but from my wife who works in the medical center in Houston - which is a far cry from a rural hosptial. But even our local rural hospital in Tomball had those translators at the ready

I totally believe this could have happened, but I'm equally ready to believe that people like making up stories to reporters.

Ahhh, well.thats very necessary context. Your initial mention of cynicism is what got me thinking this was just an uncorroborated report from a journo. I love this guy, and hope stories like this continue to gain traction.

I’ve used phone translators before for work, and Eastern language requests are often not available on demand. I’ve had to wait 15-30 mins for one to be available, and that’s during business hours. If this was a night/weekend situation, Even longer.

Oh my god Ashley, thank you for sharing that. I'm even more gobsmacked than I was about the Norwegian story.
