    Haikouichthys and Metaspriggina are a couple of stem vertebrates from the Cambrian. They apparently lacked skulls (cartilage or bone), so cannot be regarded as true vertebrates. Animals like these have been referred to the "squashed slug" phase of vert. evolution.
