2/4 In other words, rationality is not able to compress enough of our complex reality to accurately predict the true distribution of outcomes of each decision And so paired with a self-interested mind, it can be unreliable (w/ rare but decisive consequences)

3/4 2) Many of our decisions are ultimately made by a self that is opaque to our conscious mind and more complex than we can fathom Rationality, evolved for the simple domains of reality, is ineffective at penetrating or affecting this complex self

4/4 A story, and ultimately Beauty, may be superior at solving both problems 1) Better able to compress complex realities due to its ground-up, evolved nature 2) Unlike rationality, it is able to penetrate the complex part of ourselves that remains opaque to our conscious mind

Post: This last point on Beauty reminds me of two seemingly unrelated thinkers: Robert Pirsig & Oswald Spengler Pirsig believed that Quality (the Tao, Beauty) was at the edge of human experience

It was the guiding force of not just human life, but all of reality It exists before rationality OR subjectivity

This (admittedly speculative) conception of Beauty/Quality, as playing an equivalent reality-compression role as rationality, but for complex, rather than simple, domains, seems to map to Pirsig somewhat well

This is why when you come up with a new idea (Eureka!), its source is not your rational mind, but your aesthetic mind The eureka feeling is actually an aesthetic feeling: your rational mind has not had time to test the idea to know whether it is “true”. So it can’t be the source

Spengler takes it a step further: he analyzes entire societies morphologically, or as if they were biological superorganisms In this way, he comes to a similar conclusion as Pirsig: the creation of new societies, like new ideas, is a fundamentally aesthetic experience

Because true creation only comes out of aesthetics (read: out of the complex). Rationality only enters the scene after-the-fact and, he would argue, as a destroyer of culture. His Socratic man, who introduces rationality into society, is the beginning of the end.

Thus, to him, a healthy society is one that is still fully engrossed in its defining aesthetic That aesthetic is, to our rational minds, seemingly arbitrary & irrational And of course it is! The rational mind cannot penetrate the complex from which the aesthetic originated

Rationality, in evolutionary terms, climbs evolutionary peaks - it can't valley cross It exploits, but can't explore. So w/in the dominant aesthetic, it is inevitable that rationality will become increasingly dominant over time Aesthetics create the peak, rationality climbs it
