I shouldn't have to say this... but there is nothing funny about a man dying and leaving loved ones to grieve as a result of being misled by conmen and grifters he mistakenly trusted. Stay human, dammit.

I've deleted some of these tweets in this thread. He shared misinformation that I've seen a lot of people share (including people I care about), & I hoped it'd help more people see the dangers of that. Instead I'm afraid it came across as a criticism of a COVID victim.

No one is just what they tweet or share on social media. 10s of millions of Americans, including some people I love, have shared & believed the same bad info he did. Please help educate & save lives. Don't mock & belittle those for whom it's too late.https://msdh.ms.gov/msdhsite/_static/14,0,420,976.html …

The people you should save that anger and vitriol for are the powerful who knowingly & deliberately misled all the Brents out there. Not just politicians, but those in the media who used their platforms to spread deadly lies. Yet they aren't the ones suffering the consequences.

Before you reply to any of this... Think about what you'd write if you knew his loved ones would read it—because some of them likely will see your replies. His daughter wants to save lives and that's why she sent that tweet on his account. Be kind. Have empathy.

Here's what I mean when I say, "No one is just what they tweet or share on social media." Brent's daughter (I removed her name/handle—don't want to heap on more notifications) has shown incredible compassion, strength & grace in a terrible time. Look who she credits for that.pic.twitter.com/h3KyPg9d1R

Just bc you can't see the value in a stranger from your side of the black mirror doesn't mean their life isn't incredibly valuable. If you convince one person to get the vaccine...you can save an entire life—& more indirectly. I've no doubt Kayla's tweet has already saved lives.

None of what I said is meant to absolve us, as individuals, of responsibility for spreading bad information with potentially deadly effects. We all have a responsibility to one another in this pandemic. But berating the dead over it helps no one—it just hurts the grieving.
