France's Interior Minister confirmed lieutenant-colonel Arnaud Beltrame has died of his injuries following Friday’s supermarket siege in the town of Trèbes. The gendarme is hailed as a national hero after he volunteered to trade places with a female hostage who was used as a shield by the gunman.
