A new 'period emoji' is coming soon to keyboards worldwide

Following a joint campaign by Plan International UK and the blood service for England, Unicode announced that a blood drop symbol will be among the new emoji released later this year. The intention of the campaign is to remove the stigma and shame around menstruation.

New emojis approved in will come to operating systems (iOS, Android, Windows), apps (WhatsApp) and web platforms (Twitter, Facebook) throughout 2019. Appearance and release dates will vary by platform vendor.

There might still be a long way to go until all we see the shame around menstruation disappear globally, but this seems like a click in the right direction.

The period emoji is officially happening. It might not seem like it's a big deal, but it is. The stigma & shame surrounding menstruation can have a damaging effect on girls' lives. An emoji won't solve the issue, but it will start a conversation

I’m all for emojis I love a good emoji - but please, do we really need a ‘period’ emoji? In what context would it be used? ‘hey boss, can’t come in today (period emoji) # sorry’ maybe because I’m much more open about a natural female occurrence it doesn’t make sense to me.
