Explaining the Tommy Robinson case
To those who support #FreeTommy / #TommyRobinson, from someone with the actual qualifications to know what they’re talking about. A THREAD.
I’m a reporter who witnessed Tommy both live streaming in front of jurors outside #LeedsCrownCourt and him being sentenced inside the court.
But uninformed, ignorant and arrogant Tommy, running rife with conspiracy theories about cover-ups and #freedomofspeech and in spite of (as far as I know) not having a journalism accreditation, took it upon himself to ‘save the day’ and be a vigilante ‘reporter’.
He livestreamed to a very large audience, making prejudicial and even inaccurate comments. He did this within earshot of jurors turning up to court. If they did not hear him then, they could certainly stumble upon the video online. He encouraged it to be shared widely.
And let me make this clear - that gloryhunter was doing this without having sat in to listen to that trial ONCE. All the information he had was from an online PUBLIC article. So what favour exactly was he doing for the British public?
He was jailed - despite concerns for his safety - because he is a CRIMINAL who BREACHED a suspended sentence for the SAME CRIME - one that can cost taxpayers hundreds of thousands of pounds. He should have learned his lesson the first time at #CanterburyCrownCourt.
WHAT THIS IS REALLY ABOUT: Defendants have the right to a fair trial, complainants shouldn’t have to give evidence twice because a selfish stranger caused a retrial and taxpayers shouldn’t have to pay for his irresponsible ‘journalism’. Disagreeing with that is...questionable.
As the judge said: ‘Freedom of speech comes with responsibility’.
Robinson was given a second chance, he shouldn’t have been given a third. This is legal, NOT political. Stop with the #freespeech conspiracy theories already.
Moral of the story: if you want to stay out of jail, don’t go ONLINE and discuss or publish details of a court case that hasn’t been reported in the media - leave it to the PROFESSIONALS. Either that, or enroll in a #medialaw101 class and join the ranks
On another note, the judge put a temporary reporting restriction on both his arrest and his court proceedings. That ban was scheduled to end when the jury had delivered their verdicts in the trial. Again, justified.pic.twitter.com/d6YRki8mfm
So NO ONE (not me, not the rest of the media there, not @WestYorksPolice and especially not his supporters, @GerardBattenMEP nor @KTHopkins) were allowed to report his arrest or his sentence until TODAY.
Anyone who DID publish these things online, including the national media who reported the arrest and everyone who tweeted about it, is in breach of a court order and therefore in contempt of court.
And look where that got Tommy

that’s all, folks. Sleep soundly

Very informative on Tommy Robinson case, including about contempt law, by @StephanieFinneghttps://twitter.com/StephanieFinneg/status/1001440659604205569 …
This is outstanding by @StephanieFinneg, showing what real journalism and real court reporting looks like.https://twitter.com/stephaniefinneg/status/1001440604616843265 …
New on HTFP today: @leedslivenews and @Examiner reporter @StephanieFinneg overturns reporting ban on far-right activist Tommy Robinson’s sentencing at Leeds Crown Court

Well done to @StephanieFinneg & Leeds Live for getting reporting restrictions lifted. We now know Tommy Robinson pleaded guilty to contempt of court and breach of a suspended sentence, and he 'deeply regrets' his actions. Hope trial doesn't collapse. https://www.leeds-live.co.uk/news/leeds-news/tommy-robinson-jailed-facebook-live-14718619 …
This is driving me bonkers. The reporting restrictions were lifted by a local newspaper reporter who stood up in court and successfully made a case against them - namely @StephanieFinneg. The Indy's role in this is ancillary at best

Stephanie now receiving threats from Robinson followers for doing her job and doing her job well. https://twitter.com/StephanieFinneg/status/1001501812304809984 …
Total respect to @StephanieFinneg for showing why it's important to have local reporters who regularly attend courts. It's disgusting that she's getting personal abuse for doing her job and challenging reporting restrictions. She is a brave excellent reporter role model.https://twitter.com/JonathanArnott/status/1001484116381061121 …
Wishing female journalists get raped is not okay @StephanieFinnegpic.twitter.com/HnPHiapgMr
The vile abuse @StephanieFinneg is getting for doing her job for @leedslivenews by getting restrictions lifted and then naming and giving the street address of a defendant is beyond belief. Excellent and brave regional journalism throughout, especially dealing with this reaction
I taught Steph media law at @sunderlanduni and so proud of her courage in fighting for open justice
First class journalism by @StephanieFinneg explaining how and why Far Right criminal "Tommy Robinson" was jailed. The abuse she's suffered shames his supporters and apologists https://twitter.com/i/moments/1001517056150339584 …
It was the address given in court. It was published as it would be for any other Tom, Dick or Harry who appeared in court. If Tommy was concerned he could have asked his solicitor to ask the judge to restrict the media from publishing the address. He didn’t.
A good job well done. I know I’ll probably be drowned out by the idiots shouting abuse at you, but I hope you get this: thank you. Justice needs to be seen to be done, so you’ve done an important job today.
