44 years ago, May 21 1979, over a dozen cop cars burned as thousands marched and rioted in San Francisco after word broke that Dan White received the most lenient verdict for murdering George Moscone and Harvey Milk. The evening would become known as the White Night riots

Trying to live "in the now" never works. "...the past is far more real...than the present. The present slips and vanishes like sand through our fingers, acquiring weight only through recollection." Andrei Tarkovsky

There is absolutely no excuse for the Eisners or any other comic award to allow a jury this white to be making selections. Both the make-up of the jury itself, and their choice to nominate books like Woodruffโ€™s, need to be addressed.

not to be a dick on a personal level but i would like to hear from these specific people why they felt a work, from a white man, so obviously dehumanizing brown people, was worth considering for an eisner twitter.com/itskindred/staโ€ฆ

So heโ€™s certainly old enough to remember Republican politicians trying to shut down the NEA over Mapplethorpe and Piss Christ. Iโ€™m sure heโ€™s aware of the current generation of Republican politicians scaremongering about โ€œgroomersโ€ and โ€œsexualizing children.โ€

4 years ago on this day, an extremely nice taxi driver in London wished me โ€œthe best tripโ€ to Glasgow. And it was. ๐Ÿ˜Š

Culture war stuff is a non-starter, but also, on a retail politics basis, this guy is not ready for primetime.

Iโ€™m voting for the SAG-AFTRA strike, but we need to partner with burgeoning tech unions and greatly expand the demands to include child labor rights issues. The WGA, IATSE, and SAG are fighting for us all as we slip deeper into late capitalism feudalism

My only issue with the writers' strike targeting AI is that it needs to go further than the studios. Who's providing the AI that will be used to ruin writing? It's going to be companies like Google. Tech companies need to be dragged and boycotted for their attempts to sell it.

Iโ€™ve been clear about my opinion on Jodorowsky (negative), but my REAL issue with Jodorowsky is that every middling man with artistic ambitions thinks he is Jodorowsky.

But her approach to Chinese art was absolutely striking: We were required to read about intercultural influences in China as well as books citing the cultural looting that has placed objects from that part of the world into our Western museums.

Let's talk briefly about language, colonialism, and sexuality. Every instance of the word "feral" in descriptions of this book really mean "savage". The author has created a typical savage boy trope and tried to apply a surrealist lens to obscure that.

Glad to see he's finally decided what kind of comics are "real" art!

I'm not even touching the writing, which reads like the worst marketing copywriting, or the illustrations where a child's body is clearly being sexualized for the audience's aesthetic enjoyment. This is some nostalgia for a grosser pre-1970s surrealism.

Follow up: Iโ€™m a big fan of Grann. When I was putting together museum activities for students based on the Lost City of Z, he took time to answer all my questions.

Forgot to plug David Grannโ€™s The Lost City of Z in that last thread, but for everyone jumping into Killers of the Flower Moon, I recommend that book. Just not the movie. The movie was bad.

Orcas have sunk 3 boats in Europe and appear to be teaching others to do the same. Scientists think a traumatized orca initiated the assault on boats after a "critical moment of agony" and that the behavior is spreading among the population. livescience.com/animals/orcas/

Extra fun because Dave Mckean, the cover artist of the original series, cites Bacon as an influence and did the end credits for the show.

As a young person, I saw a show of Bacon's work at the Milwaukee Art Museum and it absolutely inspired my taste in painting. I try to visit "Figure with Meat" as much as possible at the Art Institute of Chicago.
That story about the guy telling me itโ€™s nerdy to be excited about the book coming out is still getting hits, so let me say: thank you for supporting me, but I was not seriously injured by him nor was I interested in dating him further.

I guess also I feel Iโ€™m a fairly fun person to talk to and interact with on a daily basis and itโ€™s extremely lame people who want me to perform romantically sexually for them donโ€™t feel that way. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ I donโ€™t meed reassurances of that- Iโ€™m just venting.
