@bencowling88 Vaccinations protect individuals from death + serious disease I am ultra pro vaccine but there is no ethical justification to coerce or mandate vaccination in HK at this stage of the epidemic Educate, trust and respect individual autonomyhttps://twitter.com/bencowling88/status/1526025033289637889 …Show this thread -

While we recommend all eligible ppl in HK - especially older adults - to receive booster jabs as recommended by CHP, we do not think there is any strong justification to *mandate* vaccine doses in young adults to push coverage beyond what can be achieved without coercion. (24/24)
Show this thread -
In summary, given the current population immune status in HK, further increasing vaccination uptake amongst young adults beyond the level that can be reached voluntarily will not help achieve zero-covid and is not needed to protect the health care system. (23/24)

In contrast, among young adults In HK there is already very high coverage of two vaccine doses, moderate uptake of a third dose, plus more than 2/3 of HK’s young adults infected in our fifth wave now benefit from post-infection immunity. (22/24)

Although the fifth wave is now over, HK will have further waves sooner or later, and older adults will likely face the highest risk of severe COVID in subsequent waves. Increasing vaccination coverage in older adults including booster doses will continue to be a priority. (21/24)

...while among those aged ≥80y, just over 50% have received two doses but only 17% have received a third dose. A variety of reasons have led to high hesitancy to receive COVID vaccination in older adults in HK. (20/24)https://www.researchsquare.com/article/rs-1569282/v1 …

… young adults in a future epidemic. Even if some remaining unvaccinated young adults now refuse to receive vaccination, or those who received only one or two doses now decline to receive a third dose, locally their overall risk of getting severe disease is still low. (18/24)

Conversely, because of the high vaccination coverage and natural immunity (acquired after fifth wave infections) that has now been achieved, and the lower rate of severe disease in young adults anyway, it would be expected there would be very few severe cases in … (17/24)

Our own research shows that two doses of COVID vaccination provide a high level of protection against severe COVID in ppl 18-59y (92% for CoronaVac and 95% for BNT) and a third dose can boost protection to an even higher level (>98% for both).
