    The first ship named in honor of an African American was the USS Harmon. It honored Mess Attendant 1st. Class Leonard Roy Harmon. He was awarded the Navy Cross for heroism during the Battle of Guadalcanal in 1942.

    Have you heard of Della H. Raney? She was the 1st black chief nurse in the Army Nurse Corps in 1941. At the time, the Army only accepted 56 black women in the nurse corps and they were only allowed to care for black male soldiers.

    2nd Infantry Ranger Co. They were the U.S Army's 1st and only all-black Airborne Ranger unit under the command of black officers. The unit served in Korea and was later deactivated but many went on to later serve in Vietnam.

    Lt. Gen. Darryl Williams is the first black officer to command West Point in its 216-year history. He graduated from USMA in 1983 and led multiple Army posts in Europe and Asia. He was announced as the superintendent last June.

    Jesse Brown was the first black aviator in the U.S. Navy and the first black naval officer killed in the Korean War. In 1973, the Navy commissioned the Knox-class frigate USS Jesse L. Brown in his honor.

    Today in features 1st Lt. Andrea Lewis. She's the 1st black female pilot in the Georgia Air National Guard. : Her father was a pilot in the USMC for 14 years and her mother is a career flight attendant with Delta Airlines.

    SFC Eugene Ashley served in Detachment A-101, Company C of the 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne). He led 5 enemy assaults and helped rescue SF soldiers trapped at Camp Lang Vei. He was the 1st black special forces soldier to be awarded the Medal of Honor.

    Gen. Daniel “Chappie” James Jr. was the 1st African American to become a four-star general. He was also a member of the Tuskegee Airmen. There's currently an effort to rename a bridge after him in his hometown of Pensacola, FL.

    The 93rd Infantry Division was made up of four units: 371st Infantry, 372nd composite battalion, 369th Infantry, and the 370th Infantry. Together, they were an all-black division that served, while segregated, in WWI and WWII. 📷: National Archives (111-M-93)
