I meet lots of gay men who vocalize their bisexuality when they find out I'm a bi activist. One asked me this:

Why Some Bi People Say They're "So Gay"
An Analysis on the usage of popular gay phrases by bisexual people.
Why Some Bi People Say They're "So Gay"
Replying to
A lot of bi people do this. Some will even continue to call themselves gay/lesbian in order to feel they remain part of the gay community.
Replying to
This is due to how folks don't see bi as queer. It says that bisexuality doesn't have a culture & pop queer culture is owned by gayness.
Replying to
Saying I'm "gay af" allows bi people to let other gay people know "I'm one of you" without the Biphobia & hassle of coming out as bi.

I can think of 2 expls right away of this in pop culture and the news. Here Kristen Stewart says "I'm so gay dude" google.com/amp/amp.dailyd
Replying to
This allowed Kristen to (officially) come out quickly on national television. Her "I'm so gay" got her a lot of press and applause.
Replying to
Her then nuanced convo about her sexuality in which she ID as bi was ignored by (especially queer women) media

The 2nd instance (I'm having trouble finding the link!) was of an activist during the election who confronted a republican candidate.
Replying to
I found it! This activist confronted Ben Carson and asked him "do you think I choose to be gay?" is actually bi:
Replying to
This was strategic for two reasons: the activist confronted him and needed to get the point across of "I'm one of them" quickly

Second, bisexuality in christian spaces is even less understood than secular spaces (Amirite Huckabee advocate.com/bisexuality/20 )
Replying to
ID'ing as bi during this direct action had the potential to derail it into a convo on bisexuality instead of a convo on 'choosing' sexuality
Replying to
I'm not arguing that bi people shouldn't say terms like "I'm so gay" or "gay af." I'm not really arguing. I want us to evaluate why bi
Replying to
Folk feel the need to engage in terms like this and as to why people don't see bisexuality as part of queer culture.
Replying to
Yes, we can help shift this narrative a bit by claiming our own terms like "bi af" but I already recognize why in some contexts it is
Replying to
Strategic to choose otherwise due to the lack of bi competency. As well as to Bi people who are just tired of biphobia and need a break.
