Suspect in Illinois Fourth of July parade shooting charged with seven counts of first-degree murder
A shooting at a Fourth of July parade in Highland Park, Illinois, about 20 miles north of Chicago left at least seven people dead and 30 injured, police say. The suspected shooter had bought his gun legally and had “pre-planned the attack for weeks” before firing more than 70 rounds into the crowd from a roof, local authorities said in a press conference on Tuesday. He was charged with seven counts of first-degree murder, with “dozens of more charges” to follow, Eric Rinehart, the Lake County, Illinois State Attorney told reporters.

It appears that the Highland Park shooting suspect has no ideological or political bent. Yet extremism researchers say these acts may actually be part of a troubling new trend. One that involves dark subcultures that glorify violence and foster nihilism.
